Cosmos, which realizes both decentralization and scalability, what kind of project is it?<iframe class="embedly-embed" src="https://cdn.embedly.com/widgets/media.html?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2FyOQefPnVgf0%3Ffeature%3Doembed&display_name=YouTube&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DyOQefPnVgf0&image=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FyOQefPnVgf0%2Fhqdefault.jpg&key=94335756f04b424b8ce3ce71cbe3de0a&type=text%2Fhtml&schema=youtube" width="560" height="315" scrolling="no" title="YouTube embed" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture;" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe> In the context of crypto, "Cosmos" refers to a project aimed at achieving interoperability among various blockchains. Here, we'll discuss its primary components:<ul><li>Cosmos Network: Refers to the entirety, composed of many independent blockchains, including the Cosmos Hub.</li><li>Cosmos SDK: Functions as a toolkit for developers to efficiently build their own blockchain applications and platforms. Its main functions are divided into modules, allowing developers to either use existing modules or create new ones to provide specific features or services.</li><li>Cosmos Hub: The first blockchain developed using the Cosmos SDK. Its native token is ATOM, which has a market capitalization of $2B as of September 2023. The Cosmos Hub has implemented the Interchain Security mechanism.</li></ul>Unless otherwise stated, "Cosmos" refers to the Cosmos Network in the explanations below. Features of Cosmos include:<ol><li>Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC): Cosmos features a protocol designed to allow different blockchains to communicate securely and efficiently.</li><li>CometBFT: Cosmos utilizes CometBFT, which implements the Tendermint consensus, offering high scalability and quick block times (instant finality). Previously named "Tendermint," the name changed to "Comet" due to trademark issues.</li><li>Hub and Zone Concept: Cosmos consists of several hubs to which different blockchains (zones) are connected. This allows different zones to interact efficiently.</li><li>Scalability: Cosmos anticipates the existence of different blockchains for each application running on the chain. Each of these blockchains operates independently, enhancing scalability across the entire network.</li><li>Sovereign Blockchains: In Cosmos, each blockchain (or zone) can have its own consensus algorithm and governance mechanism. Each blockchain can issue its own tokens, and major technical changes can be made independently through community discussions.</li></ol><h2 id="h3ca4af4479">History of Cosmos</h2>A brief overview of the journey to the current state of Cosmos:<ul><li>2014: Development of Tendermint by Jae Kwon. It's an implementation of the classic Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus algorithm with added slashing mechanism.</li><li>2016: Announcement of the Cosmos white paper, introducing the "Internet of Blockchains" concept, Tendermint consensus engine, ABCI application interface, and IBC.</li><li>2017: Establishment of the Interchain Foundation (ICF) involved in Cosmos development. An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in the spring raised $17M.</li><li>2018: Development of the Cosmos SDK and testing of the Cosmos Hub.</li><li>2019: Launch of the Cosmos Hub.</li><li>2020: Spin-out of Informal Systems from ICF.</li><li>2021: Activation of IBC functionality with the release of Stargate.</li><li>2022: Announcement of the ATOM 2.0 white paper.</li><li>2023: Activation of the first version of Interchain Security, known as Replicated Security, in Neutron.</li></ul><h2 id="h4c759f18dd">What is IBC?</h2>IBC, central to Cosmos's vision of an "Internet of Blockchains," will be explained in detail below: <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/6101591faed3432ea45dc432e3f9b3a2/ibc1.png" alt=""> Source: <a href="https://medium.com/the-interchain-foundation/eli5-what-is-ibc-def44d7b5b4c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ELI5: What is IBC?</a> IBC, short for Inter-Blockchain Communication (Protocol), is an interoperability protocol that allows two different blockchains to communicate with each other. It's not just a bridge for token transfers but a protocol that can transfer any generic message or data in various formats. By default, different blockchains exist like silos with limited interactions between them. Trust in third-party bridges is required for operations like token transfers between blockchains. However, using IBC allows chains with quick finality to exchange messages without the need for a trusted third party. IBC significantly enhances inter-blockchain interoperability. The Cosmos SDK is available for developers to easily launch IBC-compatible blockchains from scratch. <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/d6635101123a448399b67d7b66ef35e3/ibc2.png" alt=""> Source: <a href="https://tutorials.cosmos.network/academy/3-ibc/1-what-is-ibc.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">What is IBC?</a> It's essential to understand IBC as being divided into the transport layer and application layer. The transport layer allows for quick and cheap verification of IBC messages (data packets) through light clients, enabling safe data exchange without the need for intermediaries. In this data transfer, channels are created for each module, with relayers playing the role of sending messages. The application layer defines applications for various use cases. For instance, the ICS20 standard specifies how data packets should be structured for<h2 id="h9549c6bfb7">Challenges with IBC</h2>In the two years since the release of IBC, over 100 Cosmos chains have been launched and enormous wealth has been transferred between these chains using IBC. However, IBC usage hasn't yet been extended much beyond blockchains made with the Cosmos SDK. To achieve the vision Cosmos sets forth, there's a need to connect with more ecosystems and further the development utilizing IBC. Here are some current challenges with IBC:<h3 id="h0751c36b3c">Extending IBC Beyond Cosmos</h3>The IBC, designed to achieve interoperability, can be implemented using the ABCI (Application-Blockchain Interface) even without using the Cosmos SDK. This means that chains other than the so-called Cosmos chains can logically connect with IBC. However, there is the high gas fee issue when connecting with blockchains using EVM, like the popularly used Ethereum or Arbitrum with its Rollups. <a href="https://www.polymerlabs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Polymer</a>, an investment of Tané, is working on this challenge with a vision to connect all blockchains using IBC, leading the expansion through the <a href="https://www.openibc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OpenIBC</a> organization.<h3 id="ha1e49f47f4">Tools and Document Support for Developers Using IBC</h3>Compared to the Ethereum ecosystem, which leverages composability, the tools and document support for Cosmos developers are still immature. Especially, mechanisms like Interchain Queries (ICQ) and Interchain Accounts (ICA) that facilitate the use of IBC are still in their infancy and require improvement. The test framework is also not yet fully matured. Organizations deeply involved in Cosmos software, such as <a href="https://strange.love/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Strangelove</a>, are particularly focused on this area.<h3 id="h179cae47cf">Improvement in Overall Marketing</h3>Owing to its historical background and its characteristic of not having a governing body, Cosmos lacks entities committed to the development of its ecosystem from a marketing perspective. Despite having excellent developers, technology, and concepts, in terms of user and developer engagement, it is still behind the Ethereum ecosystem. This challenge should be tackled by the participants of the entire ecosystem, led by the <a href="https://interchain.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Interchain Foundation</a>.<h2 id="hd06255d7e5">The Future of Cosmos</h2><img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/34de55d238af44cb86ed1125f7bb9163/eth-cosmos-dev.png" alt=""> Source: <a style="background-color:#ffffff" href="https://www.developerreport.com/developer-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Developer Report: Analysis of Open-Source Crypto Developers by Electric Capital</a> For the growth of any ecosystem, there's a need for applications that are used by many users. Therefore, developers who create these applications are essential for the ecosystem's expansion. The size of the Cosmos developer ecosystem, compared to the Ethereum/EVM/Solidity developer ecosystem, is still small. According to a developer report by Electric Capital, as of 2022, there was about a threefold difference in the number of developers between Ethereum and Cosmos. Considering the recent surge in Rollups, there's likely an even larger number of developers in the Ethereum sphere now. The vision that Cosmos aims for, the "Internet of Blockchains", should also include connecting chains outside of Cosmos. Therefore, continuous improvements in IBC with a focus on the developer experience, the rise of customized blockchains using the Cosmos SDK to realize new use cases and their applications, and the actualization of interoperability with already popular chains will be challenges going forward. id="h0ee4575ed1">IBCとは</h2>Cosmosの目指すビジョンである「Internet of Blockchains」を実現するために最も重要な技術、IBCについて詳しく解説していきたいと思います。 <img (Protocol)の略で、2つの異なるブロックチェーンが互いに通信することを可能にする相互運用性（インターオペラビリティ）プロトコルです。単なるトークン転送のブリッジだけを行うものではなく、任意の汎用的なメッセージ、つまりあらゆる形式のデータを転送できるプロトコルとなっています。 異なるブロックチェーンはそれぞれサイロのように存在していて、その相互作用はデフォルトでは限定的にならざるを得ません。ブロックチェーン間でトークンの移動などを行いたい場合も、サードパーティであるブリッジなどに信頼を置いて処理を行う必要があります。一方、IBCを利用することで、十分に早いファイナリティを持つチェーン同士であれば、信頼するサードパーティを必要とせず、メッセージをやり取りできるという、トラストの最小化を実現することが出来ます。IBCはブロックチェーン間の相互運用性を大幅に向上するための仕組みと言えます。IBCに対応したブロックチェーンを開発者がゼロから開発することなく簡単に立ち上げるために、Cosmos IBCの仕組みはトランスポート層とアプリケーション層に分けて理解することが重要です。トランスポート層では、転送されるIBCのメッセージ（データパケット）を、ライトクライアントによって素早く安価に検証することによって、中間にいる第三者を必要とせずに安全にデータを交換することが可能となっています。このデータ転送において、モジュールごとにチャンネルが作成され、リレイヤーがメッセージを送る役割を担います。アプリケーション層では、様々なユースケース毎にアプリケーションが規定されています。わかり易い例でいうとトークン転送のためのアプリケーションとして、ICS20という規格があり、データパケットがどのように構成されるべきか、などが規定されています。最近実際に実装されて運用され始めているInterchain SecurityもIBCを元に作られています。<h2 id="h466208b579">IBCの課題</h2>IBCがリリースされて2年の間に100以上のCosmosチェーンがリリースされ、IBCを使って巨額の富がそのチェーン間でやりとりされていますが、Cosmos SDKで作られたブロックチェーン以外にはまだそこまで展開できていない現状があります。Cosmosが掲げるビジョンを実現するためには、より多くのエコシステムとCosmosエコシステムがつながって、IBCを利用した開発が進んでいくことを目指す必要があります。 以下にIBCの現状の課題を挙げたいと思います。<h3 id="hf2453e0535">Cosmos外へのIBC展開</h3>相互運用性を実現するIBC自体は、Cosmos SDKを使わなくてもABCI（Application-Blockchain Interface）を利用することで、実装可能です。つまり、いわゆるCosmosチェーン以外もIBCで接続することが論理的には可能となっています。しかし、現在多くのユーザに使われているEthereumやArbitrumなどのRollupで採用されているEVMを使ったブロックチェーンとつなげるには、ガス代の問題が指摘されています。Tanéの投資先でもある<a href="https://www.polymerlabs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Polymer</a>は、ゼロ知識証明技術を利用してあらゆるブロックチェーンをIBCをつなげるというビジョンを掲げて、この課題に取り組んでいて、<a href="https://www.openibc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OpenIBC</a>という団体を作ってさらなるIBC展開を主導しています。<h3 id="hf0cdf1d198">IBCを使う開発者向けのツールやドキュメントのサポート</h3>Composabilityを武器にするEthereumエコシステムに比べて、Cosmosの開発者向けツールやドキュメントサポートがまだまだ未成熟です。特に、IBCを便利に使うための仕組みであるInterchain Queries （ICQ）やInterchain Accounts（ICA）はまだ出来たばかりで改善が必要だったり、テストフレームワークがまだまだ成熟しきっていません。Cosmosエコシステムのソフトウェアに深く関わっている<a href="https://strange.love/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Strangelove</a>などがこの領域に特に力を入れて取り組んでいます。<h3 id="hb12243ca7b">マーケティング全般の改善</h3>Cosmosは歴史的経緯や主体を持たないという特性から、そのエコシステムの発展自体にマーケティングの側面からコミットしている存在がないこともあり、優秀な開発者、優れた技術とコンセプトはあるもののユーザ、開発者面でEthereumエコシステムに負けているということがあると考えています。この課題については<a href="https://interchain.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Interchain Foundation</a>を中心に、エコシステム全体の参加者が取り組んでいくべきです。<h2 id="ha92aee2c0b">Cosmosの今後</h2><img あらゆるエコシステムの拡大には、より多くのユーザに使われるアプリケーションの存在が必要です。そのためにそのアプリケーションを作り出す開発者、そのエコシステムの拡充は不可欠です。Cosmos開発者エコシステムの大きさは、Ethereum/EVM/Solidityの開発者エコシステムに比べると、まだまだ小さいです。Electric Capitalによる開発者レポートによると、EthereumとCosmosの開発者人口は、2022年時点で約3倍の規模の差があったとされています。昨今のRollupの盛り上がりを考えると、更にEthereum経済圏での開発者は増えているでしょう。 Cosmosが目指すビジョンである「Internet of Blockchains」自体はCosmos外のチェーンを繋いでいくことも含んでいるはずです。そのためにも開発者体験を意識したIBCの継続的な改善、そしてCosmos Today, we are excited to announce our investment in <a href="https://www.fhenix.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fhenix</a>, the first blockchain with Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). (This is a participation in a $7.5M funding round with Multicoin Capital as the lead investor.) Encryption of data on public blockchains has been one of the biggest challenges in blockchains. Many data, such as funds transfers, personal data, should not be made public on a blockchain. Encryption of sensitive data is essential for mass adoption of Web3. Fhenix makes sensitive data securely available on the public blockchain and provides developers with tools to compute that data for the first time. They feature fhEVM, a set of extensions for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It allows developers to seamlessly integrate FHE into their workflow and create cryptographic smart contracts in Solidity without cryptographic expertise. (The fhEVM protocol was developed by <a href="https://www.zama.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Zama</a>, an open-source FHE solution provider.) Two “Guy”s founded Fhenix. <a href="https://twitter.com/GuyZys" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Guy Zyskind</a> is one of the best leading experts in the Crypto space who has been working on on-chain confidentiality for a long period. He founded Enigma and was one of the first to try on-chain crypto using MPC technology. He later founded Secret Network, which provides on-chain encryption using Intel's SGX Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Another Guy is <a href="https://twitter.com/GuyItzh" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Guy Itzhaki</a>, former Director of Intel's FHE &amp; Blockchain division. He has decades of experience in cybersecurity and secrecy. In addition to these two, Zama, a proven FHE developer, and an FHE expert, joined Fhenix. We believe they are the best team to solve on-chain confidentiality issues. We are very excited to support Fhenix as they take on the challenge of solving a problem critical to the entire ecosystem. We have invested in the Crypto infrastructure and middleware projects so far. We want to introduce "Modular Blockchain" concept as a new blockchain architecture design. Modular Blockchain projects have gotten a lot of attention from an investment perspective. Projects in this area have raised a lot of money.<h1 id="h8258169153">How the modular blockchain came into being</h1>Blockchain design was initially monolithic (meaning monolithic Note 1), with a single blockchain performing all execution, settlement, consensus, and data availability. e.g. Monolithic blockchains: Ethereum, Avalanche, Solana, etc. However, as monolithic blockchains such as Ethereum have grown, it has become clear that they have limitations in terms of scalability to handle a large number of users and a vast number of transactions. We have frequently experienced higher gas prices and transaction delays on the Ethereum when used by many users or when many transactions occurred, such as during the DeFi Summer of 2020 and the NFT Summer of 2021. An evolution of this concept is the “Modular Blockchain." The concept is that by unbundling the main functions of a layer 1 blockchain, we can make 100x improvement on the individual layers, resulting in a more scalable, combinable, decentralized system. It means that functions that are usually integrated are separated. In a blockchain, one of the functions of execution, settlement, consensus building, and data availability is decoupled. A modular blockchain is designed to specialize in a function rather than trying to do all functions in one blockchain. The concept is to create a more scalable and customizable system by combining blockchains specializing in each function required for the blockchain. Modular blockchains are divided into the following functions. <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/fbb7f7af8cf34813b4e8949780668034/ModularBlockchains.png" alt=""> Source:　<a style="font-size: 0.75em" href="https://volt.capital/blog/modular-blockchains" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">"Modular Blockchains: A Deep Dive" by Volt Capital</a> <ul><li>Execution: Processing changes in transaction status.</li><li>Settlement: Proof verification and dispute resolution, bridge hub, and liquidity provision.</li><li>Consensus: Provides ordering and finality.</li><li>Data Availability: Storage and publication of data necessary to validate state transitions. Verification of data availability. This layer is the main bottleneck of blockchain scalability.</li></ul> A monolithic blockchain, on the other hand, handles all of the above functions in a single blockchain. The following issues are recognized in monolithic blockchains. <ul><li>Stringent hardware requirements: Although monolithic blockchains can increase the number of transactions processed, they require higher hardware specifications for the nodes that validate the chain. This leads to increased costs.　e.g. One of the reasons for Solana's high processing speed is the high hardware specifications of the nodes.</li><li>Bootstrapping the validator set: When launching a new monolithic blockchain, validators must be collected to ensure security.</li><li>Limitations of Control: dApps must follow the rules of the chain they are deployed to.</li></ul> Next, let's look at types of the modular blockchain. <h2 id="hdf74dc6eda">Smart contract rollup</h2><img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/aaab2272d1c943c28da0db88c7747cbe/SmartContractRollup.png" alt=""> Source: <a style="font-size: 0.75em" href="https://celestia.org/learn/sovereign-rollups/an-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celestia</a> A smart contract rollup is a blockchain that exposes the entire block to a payment layer like Ethereum. Take the Ethereum rollup. For example the smart contract rollup takes the execution part. Ethereum handles settlement, consensus building, and data availability. <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/006ee9c227d941ed8732a509e0c915d0/SCR2.png" alt=""> Source: <a style="font-size: 0.75em" href="https://celestia.org/learn/sovereign-rollups/an-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celestia</a> As the name implies, Smart Contract Rollup is a smart contract on Ethereum that performs block validation. Since verifying transactions individually does not scale, proof efficiently verifies whether a block is valid (validity proof) or invalid (fraud proof). <h2 id="hc41ed7aa05">Sovereign rollup</h2><img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/2b57c02437ad43d59041b411dc660895/SovereignRollup.png" alt=""> Source: <a style="font-size: 0.75em" href="https://celestia.org/learn/sovereign-rollups/an-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celestia</a> Sovereign rollups, as the name implies, are sovereign rollups. It refers to a blockchain that publishes transactions to another blockchain for ordering and data availability layers, and you do settlements. Like the L1 blockchain, it can be upgraded through forking. When forked, nodes can choose whether or not to update their software. This feature brings sovereignty. <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/553e5f263d894230b221d71fb8ddf940/RU2.png" alt=""> 出典：　<a style="font-size: 0.75em" href="https://celestia.org/learn/sovereign-rollups/an-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celestia</a> The Data Availability Layer does not validate transactions for sovereign rollups; the nodes that validate sovereign rollups are responsible for validating transactions. <h1 id="h633c979d42">Benefits of Modular Blockchain</h1>Here are some of the advantages of modular blockchain. <h2 id="h315597e4f8">Scalability</h2>The basic concept of modular blockchains was to achieve scalability by separating each blockchain function as a modular so that each function could focus on improving it. Modular blockchains like Celestia can specialize in data availability. Since there are no smart contracts, all L1 resources can be focused on L2, such as rollups, thereby increasing the data capacity that can be provided. In a monolithic blockchain, the increased usage of some applications, such as DeFi Summer, will cause the gas price of transactions to skyrocket and transaction speeds to deteriorate for users of other applications. However, this problem does not occur in a modular blockchain world because the applications reside on separate chains. Regarding the metrics for measuring scalability, Maven11 states the following. 2<blockquote>When we talk about scalability the first thought that comes to mind from most people is usually transactions per second. However, this should not be the actual discussion being had around scalability. When talking about scalability in a specialized DA layer it should rather be mb/s, instead of transactions per second which should be the major hurdle to overcome. Mb/s becomes an objective measure of the capacity of a chain, rather than tp's since transactions vary in size. Here Celestia stands quite well, since it unbloats the DA layer and utilizes data availability sampling to increase the amounts of mb/s the system can handle.</blockquote> Ethereum aims to improve scalability with EIP-4844, but when that will happen, and how much scalability will be achieved in this <a href="https://www.notion.so/Modular-Blockchain-Thesis-745c4af3d69e49238aab8d36579cb6a9?pvs=21" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">discussion</a>. Celestia uses a mechanism called Data Availability Sampling to improve the amount of data it can handle (MB/sec). Depending on the progress of Ethereum's EIP-4844, the competitive landscape for Celestia and other data availability layers will change. <h2 id="h90d730ba6c">Shared Security</h2>Building your validator set is the biggest hurdle when launching a new monolithic blockchain. From a security perspective, Sufficient validator set is essential but very difficult to achieve. For validators, being a validator for a new monolithic blockchain means investing in tokens and taking risks. Therefore, participation in new projects would be difficult. In this regard, there is no need to start a new validator set in the modular blockchain world. New blockchains can be deployed on Ethereum, Celestia, etc., with a data availability layer, leaving the security aspects to you. <h2 id="h5c8918ab48">Sovereignty.</h2>When an application is built on a monolithic blockchain, it must follow the rules of the chain it is built on. For example, an application on Ethereum must follow the rules of Ethereum. Rules are social agreements, technical rules, etc. In a modular blockchain, it is possible to control the rules that meet the requirements of each project/product with "sovereignty". For example, it is possible to build DeFi-specific chains (e.g., dYdX on Cosmos, Sei, etc.), NFTFi-specific chains (e.g., UnUniFi on Cosmos), gaming chains, etc., that require high throughput and low cost, which are rarely offered on monolithic blockchains. It is possible to build a chain specialized for gaming, etc. <h1 id="h1e13fe5e71">Challenges of Modular Blockchains</h1>We have had discussions with founders, developers, and investors of modular blockchains. While they have received a lot of attention, some have questioned the challenges that need to be solved and the usefulness of modular blockchains when they are assumed to be modular. We believe decentralization, composability, and interoperability, critical elements of Crypto, must be ensured even in modular blockchains. Let's take a look at the issues and discussions on modular blockchains. <h2 id="h839e307709">Hidden Costs of Modular Blockchains</h2>Kyle of Multicoin Capital, a prominent investor who has helped Solana, a monolithic blockchain, from its inception, writes, <a href="https://multicoin.capital/2023/08/15/the-hidden-costs-of-modular-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Hidden Costs of Modular Systems</a>.<blockquote>Modular building blocks are great. But the key to building winning technologies is to figure out which pieces of the stack to integrate, and which pieces to leave for others. And as it stands now, chains that integrate DA and execution inherently offer simpler end-user and developer experiences, and will ultimately provide a better substrate for best-in-class applications.</blockquote>The reasons for this are the following shortcomings of modular blockchains. <ul><li>Modular blockchains do not execute code fast enough</li><li>Modularity increases transaction costs for users</li><li>App rollups do not provide new monetization opportunities for developers</li><li>App rollups do not address congestion between apps</li><li>Flexibility is overrated</li></ul> <h2 id="hbc6066cd4a">Interoperability</h2>When the number of blockchains increases significantly due to modular blockchains, rollups, app-chains, etc., it becomes challenging to maintain the interoperability of different blockchains. Specifically, the following two problems can be identified. <h3 id="h983fbcb38b">State Fragmentation</h3>Modular blockchains, where the application state is held in different execution layers, make retrieving and validating that data difficult. Applications running on a monolithic blockchain do not have this problem because all contract state is stored on the same network. The problem may be further complicated when smart contracts are deployed on multiple blockchains, such as L1, L2, and L3. The solution to this problem is messaging protocols. A generalized messaging protocol allows arbitrary messages to be transferred between different chains. Messaging protocols solve state fragmentation by verifying and relaying packets of data between chains. Protocols such as LayerZero, Axelar, Hyperlane, and Wormhole offer solutions as messaging protocols. The leading standardized method for inter-chain messaging is Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC), which is widely deployed in the Cosmos ecosystem. But the IBC developer experience needs to be improved for wider adoption. <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/14d1d5060acf4d8b96f9e7819baaedaf/Polymer.png" alt=""> <a href="https://www.polymerlabs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Polymer</a> combines IBCs with zero-knowledge proofs and a Tendermint-based consensus engine to build a modular IBC transport hub. This enables communication between modular blockchains in a form that minimizes trust. <img src="https://images.microcms-assets.io/assets/c5cc6f57e5fa46ba91922af7aa7fc644/be41a98da9404c648e1f0e063c2447c5/MHIBC.png" alt=""> Currently, IBC connections are one-to-one with IBC channels; Polymer has made a multi-hop upgrade to change IBC connections to one-to-N with IBC channels. The exponential increase in the number of connections was changed to a linear change, thus reducing the cost of maintaining connections throughout the chain. Disclosure: Polymer is a Tané portfolio project. <h3 id="h5e63aebc3f">Fragmentation of Liquidity</h3>Liquidity refers to the efficiency and ease with which assets can be bought and sold on optimal terms. Liquidity is very important for the DeFi project because it affects user slippage. A monolithic blockchain DeFi project will not have liquidity issues because all users will trade on the same network. However, some chains' liquidity may be low if the project is deployed on multiple chains. (e.g., Uniswap has inferior liquidity outside of Ethereum) Low liquidity may result in significant slippage or inability to handle large positions. The solution to this problem is the Cross-Chain Liquidity Protocol. Using a standard bridge to move assets involves many steps and a poor user experience. Cross-chain liquidity protocols such as <a href="https://catalyst.exchange/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Catalyst</a> attempt to build a liquidity layer across cross-chains and provide a cross-chain AMM-like solution. Disclosure: Catalyst is a Tané portfolio project. <h1 id="h8ca3832f6d">The Future of Modular Blockchains</h1>We have described the current status and challenges of modular blockchains. Modular blockchains have emerged to solve the challenges of monolithic blockchains. However, many problems must be solved to make the modular blockchain world a reality. Fast monolithic blockchains still exist. New solutions may emerge in the direction of integrating separate functions, contrary to the modularization trend of today. We have launched an incubator focused on Web3 called Tané, based in Dubai, NYC, and Tokyo. He holds many kinds of tokens, but they were not tokens that he invested in or purchased but tokens that he received as compensation for development.
